The hummingbird — el chuparón — is one of the most powerful symbols in Mexican folk tradition, and no one wore it more iconically than Frida Kahlo. In her 1940 self-portrait "Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird," Frida placed a dead hummingbird at her throat — a symbol of luck in love in Mexican culture. For Frida, it was both a talisman and a statement: beauty, pain, and resilience worn as one.
This necklace honors that legacy. The hummingbird pendant is hand-sculpted from barro negro — the legendary black clay of Oaxaca — by artisans who have carried this ancient craft for generations. Barro negro gets its distinctive deep, lustrous black from the iron-rich clay of the Cañada Chica valley, polished by hand to a mirror-like finish unique to each piece. No molds, no machines — only skilled hands shaping earth into art.
The pendant hangs from a hand-knotted cord in cream, a technique rooted in traditional Mexican jewelry-making that gives each necklace its organic, artisanal character.
