Traditional outfit of the Tzotziles, an indigenous group that inhabits Zinacantan, Chiapas. The word Zinacantan means "place of the bats," symbolized by the cape the women wear over their shoulders called Machabal. The dark and rich colors of the outfit represent their environment, while the bright floral colors represent their economic culture.
The men wear a sarape known as pok'u'ul that is also embroidered in rich and colorful flowers to match the women's.
It can be worn over denim or dress pants, a white skirt, and traditionally worn over muslin fabric pants and shirts—ties on the sides by roped tassels.
